We got to install these microwave ovens

cosmic microwave...cool, huh?

Our little family is trying another experiment.

We've unplugged the microwave and took it out of the kitchen. Well, actually, it's on the floor next to the door going out to the garage. But it's out of the way.

We are trying for a couple weeks to see how we like living without a microwave. We discovered that cooking with a microwave isn't the healthiest for you and while we don't use it to actually cook things, we do use it rather frequently to re-heat things. We had grown to depend on it for all our quick-cooking needs and thought that if we're going to be serious about creating as simple and healthy home as possible, the microwave has to go.

So it did.

And you know what? We don't miss it.

Well, I don't, and I'm pretty sure my husband would say the same thing.

We've found, too, that our food actually tastes better when re-heated on the stove or in the oven. Amazing! Leftovers aren't just re-heated soggy seconds, they almost taste as fresh and yummy as they did the first time around. That is enough to motivate me!

So, that's our kitchen tip for the week. If you could call it a tip. :) I'm sure plenty of people already knew this. And maybe it isn't a tip....with the extra dishes to wash. But there are tips for that, too!

whoops....forgot to credit the picture again....i got it off google images when i searched microwaves, but evidently it's from barnabu.co.uk, whatever that is...

We stopped using our microwave quite a while ago...and I agree with you. Food does taste SO much better when re-heated on the stove...and it really doesn't take much longer. Thanks for sharing this!

Great tip. Our mic went out a few months ago - I really missed it though - sorry to say. I was fine with reheating and all - but I did miss the "dead" oven. Someone gave us an extra one they had - I will have to reconsider if I should go back to the old fashioned way of reheating. Thanks for challenging me to think of the health benifits vs speed.

Blessings,

I don't like the mic either. But dh & kids use it more then me. I have a cute tea pot to heat water for my tea. Ours is really big too.

Ah, us too! Though it resurrected for some houseguest who required reheated coffee all day (icky). It actually now sits use-able outside the kitchen, but rarely used. We got an oster convection/toaster oven from Costco and it's awesome.

Wow! Somehow I didn't realize I had all these comments. Thanks for that!

Ellajac, couldn't the coffee be reheated in the coffee pot? Or do you mean half-sipped cups of coffee? Then.....I don't know. We have an Oster toaster/convection oven, too. Got it as a wedding present and love it.
